Signposting the Green Credentials of Telematics
GlobalLive’s Dr David Clayton was pleased to speak at the recent Green Conference organised by Commercial Motor on 15 October.
David’s presentation focused on the fast-developing green credentials of telematics and the role the discipline has to play in driving down costs in the increasingly competitive road transport industry.
Many users are already reporting significant reductions in fuel consumption thanks to a real insight into driver performance, the implementation of effective routing and scheduling and the introduction of PDA technology for satellite navigation, signature capture and job management.
With GlobalLive’s introduction of advanced levels of CANbus connectivity in partnership with Accutest, combined with the company’s existing and advanced end to end telematics solutions, GlobalLive enables fleet managers to enjoy a hitherto unparalleled level of transparency in terms of the day to day operations of their fleets.

Universal Connectivity With Canbus From Globallive
Universal Connectivity With Canbus From Globallive
With many different organisations now offering telematics solutions incorporating CANbus connectivity, the potential for linking with telematics solutions to yield improved fuel economy, driver performance and overall engine management capabilities could add up to significant savings.
Lots of companies claim to offer CANbus technology linked to existing telematics solutions. What makes GlobalLive different is that working with technology partner Accutest, the company claims to offer 95%+ connectivity across a mixed fleet - meaning you can install CANbus with confidence and be sure it will feed back information regardless of vehicle type. A brief vehicle survey carried out free of charge by the company prior to installation is used to confirm the accessibility of the entire fleet.
CANbus connects to the engine management system of a vehicle via an FMS (Fleet Management Standard) adaptor, giving detailed vehicle and engine management information such as engine rpm, fuel usage, use of gears, braking force, engine torque - even remote odometer readings and fuel in tank information.
With the inclusion of the new exclusive interface development deriving from an exclusive joint development with technology partners Accutest, GlobalLive can now offer true CANbus connectivity via a CANbus system which is the most innovative and comprehensive currently available anywhere.
ACCUSCAN for GlobalLive gives access to data either from the diagnostics port of the vehicle, or from the vehicle communications network using the FMS and the Accutest Vehicle Gateway (AVG).
The unique integration of Accuscan with the GlobalLive data infra-structure enables real-time diagnostic fault codes and parametric data from the majority of vehicles for the first time. GlobalLive's powerful reporting engine translates the CANbus data into meaningful reports, enabling you to make informed decisions to improve efficiency and economy. Bespoke reporting is also available, configurable for different vehicle makes and models.

RHA Proposes Telematics as a Solution to Rising Costs in the Haulage Industry
RHA Proposes Telematics as a Solution to Rising Costs in the Haulage Industry
With costs rising on an almost daily basis, the RHA's technical services manager, Steve Biddle, asks: Telematics.is this the solution?
The haulage industry is going through a period of cost increases the like of which it has never experienced. The primary cause of these increases is the cost of fuel, with daily rises to diesel due to the world oil price and the continued refusal of government to understand or even care about the plight of what is a vital industry for the UK.
Regardless of the commercial pressures being imposed on hauliers from outside forces that they have no control over, there are many areas of business that operators can influence and improve. Vehicle efficiency is one such area that hauliers need to focus on, remembering that improved vehicle performance and efficiency can only be achieved with the full support and involvement of the driver.
To ensure that both of these very valuable assets are being optimised you first need to understand how each is performing today. Only when the details are established and understood can you make the changes required to bring about much needed improvements to both efficiency and performance of the driver and vehicle.
Telematics is one such solution. As part of the work of the Road Haulage Association's Technical Committee, the group attended a presentation from Global Live Fleet Monitoring Solutions in Wakefield, Yorkshire. The aim was to fully understand what telematics can bring to an operation, while also determining what was not required. The group consists of engineers and company owners from many sectors of the haulage industry, with car transporter, caravan, agricultural, heavy and general haulage all represented.
Most of those attending the presentation had some reservation about adding to their already spiralling costs by installing another device that may or may not solve all their woes. But from the comments following the presentation it was clear that any doubts were truly resolved.
Dr David Clayton and his team of Phillip Fretwell, Dr Alfonso Ferrandez and Phil Goldstone gave a very professional presentation on what is clearly an advanced and constantly evolving telematics solution. These systems provide a quality, robust and comprehensive process to not only track and trace vehicles within the smallest or largest fleets, but offer so much more management information that can be tailored to meet the requirement of each individual operator. With the information in truly real time, details are instant which allows for changes being made today, not tomorrow when any benefit may have been lost.
The tracking element allows for real time multi-vehicle, multi-user access to the whole vehicle fleet, live on screen. We were shown GlobalLive's NOW Assist program. This is a PDA-based solution delivering manifests to drivers, together with proof of delivery (signature capture, bar code reading, photography) and sat nav. Traffic controllers can view job details, to monitor progress and respond in real time.
As with any IT process, there is a need for continued updating and integration of other technologies such as digital tachograph and tyre pressure monitoring, or to meet specific contractual or legal requirements. GlobalLive says that most good telematics systems are capable of meeting operational, environmental and customer needs, while retaining the capability of change for a range of applications.
A fully integrated system capable of merging with the majority of back office systems provides end to end solutions, coupled with detailed reporting of those areas important to your business. Whether that is fuel management, temperature monitoring for refrigerated vehicles, driver behaviour, accident alerts or the soon to be introduced new LGV mapping option, any combination can be tailored to each operation's unique requirements.
The complexity of operations, customer requirements, driver and traffic behaviour all affect on the commercial survival of a transport operator. With the costs associated with vehicle operations such as fuel, congestion, customer expectations and demands, plus compliance with legislation slashing your margins to nothing or worse, operators sceptical about telematics technology often ask themselves: 'Can I afford to consider telematics as an aid to improvement?' They should really be asking: 'How can I afford not to?'
For the cost of £1.00 per vehicle per day - fully inclusive with no hidden costs according to GlobalLive - you will not need much improvement within your operation to see a return. In fuel alone, less than two unnecessary miles saved per day has returned the investment. One hour's overtime not required will finance a system for at least a week. Just imagine what could be saved if a system was established and used to manage cost across a whole fleet!

The Great Tow Show Chop
The Great Tow Show Chop
Hair today, gone tomorrow - GlobalLive supported Richard Goddard's recent Tow Show haircut to the tune of £1000, with all monies raised going to RISC.
At last year's Tow Show, Richard Goddard - famous for his pony tail - was asked if he would consider facing the scissors. He nobly agreed - but only if those in favour of the chop raised £30,000 or more for RISC, the Rescue & Recovery charity.
Well, the money was been pledged - and Richard faced the unkindest cut of all on Thursday 26th June at one of the European Tow Show's social events, with the GlobalLive team there to offer encouragement!
All went to plan and Richard is now minus his crowning glory!
